Basics Of YouTube

It would be surprising to find anyone who doesn’t know about YouTube.

In the past many people thought of YouTube as a place for funny videos.

As a business owner you might want to tap into the power of YouTube but you don’t know where to start.

That’s why in this post I’m going to share with you some of the basics you need to understand before using this platform.

YouTube can be powerful because it’s owned by Google.  YouTube is the second most popular  search engine in the world so if you want to be found it’s one of the places you need to be for your online presence.

Here are some of the basics when it comes to your YouTube Channel.

Playlist

A playlist is where you group together videos that are in a particular category.  For example if you loved the M&M commercials you could create a playlist of all those videos.    For business education you can create a variety of lists such as marketing videos.

How do you create a playlist?

It’s super easy to do.

Log into your YouTube account

Find the video you want to add

Click the add to button.

Select a playlist or create a new one

How to upload your videos

You will see a button that says "upload".  It should be at the top of the page on the right.

After your video is uploaded you are going to want to assign a privacy setting to it.

Click the drop down menu and you have these options:

Public - this means that your video will also be displayed on your Google+ page and anyone can view this video. If you want to get ranked in the search engines than I would suggest you use this setting.

Private - You select people that can view your video. This is perfect if you have a family video or a private training that you don't want people to find.

Unlisted - this means that only people who have the actual link can view the video.

What is the Video Manager?

This is the area where you can change all of your video settings. You can change your privacy settings, your description, add tags and images and select or add a custom thumbnail.

You can see the video manager on the top right of your channel art.

What is Video Quality?

This refers to the resolution of your video. When you upload your video to YouTube they automatically select, what they think, is the best resolution for you. This is also done for best performance and loading times.  When I upload videos and they are animated it doesn't matter too much if the settings are low (480).  When you play back other types of videos such as my marketing tips videos, it’s best to have the higher resolution.  The problem is you can’t set the higher resolution.  People viewing your video would have to do that on their own.

This is done by clicking on the gear bar icon.  It's the second one in.

How to Share Your Video on Facebook

This is quite easy to do. You can either use the link under "Share" from YouTube. Or you can click the Photo/Video tab on your Facebook page and share your video there.

Now that you understand the basics of YouTube you can easily start creating and uploading your videos!

I've got a couple of videos made from my novels, but I don't think I'm marketing them properly. All I do is tweet about them maybe once a month, feature them on my Goodreads page, and showcase them on my Amazon author page.

Hi Francene, Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Do you also have the videos on your blog? On your Facebook Pages?

We use YouTube quite a bit. Not as a stand-alone channel, but one to support our blog writings.

Hi Scott, Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I think some people believe having a YouTube channel is all they need when in actuality it's only part of your video marketing strategy.

Thanks for this great info. I've been considering creating some videos for my yoga, so this helps. Up to now, all I've done is WATCHED YouTube. :)
