Although there are many ways to advertise your business for free ( I've written a book on this topic) you may get to the point where you want to look at paid options.

When it comes to advertising your business there are so many options and it can be overwhelming.  The good news is this infographic will help guide you along the way.

When it comes to advertising many people today are turning to Facebook but as you can see there are many options.

Something that was a hot topic the other day in a private Facebook group I belong to was "retargeting".

Have you ever noticed you can look at a pair of shoes and the next thing you know there are ads showing up wherever you go? That's retargeting.

How does this happen?  There is a cookie based technology that allows companies to anonymously follow their audience.

A small piece of code is placed on the advertisers website.

When someone visits the site the code drops a browser cookie that then follows you. Then as you browse the web the cookie lets the retargeting provider know and voila the ad appears again!

Let's take a look for a minute at display advertising.  If you sold golf clubs, you could find a website where your target audience might visit.  Perhaps it's a country club or site that gives tips on golfing.  Look for a tab that says "advertise."  Click on that and find out how you could advertise on their site.  You can do this for any website or blog.  This might be an option you never thought of.

One thing you want to make sure of is that your site doesn't have a high bounce rate.  If it does you need to find out why before you put money into advertising.  Once this is fixed you should see a better ROI.

My question for you is, what type of advertising have your tried?  What has worked best for you?

The infographjc contains a lot of information that would be very helpful to someone trying to build a small business. Thank you for sharing it.

You say this:
"When someone visits the site the code drops a browser cookie that then follows you. Then as you browse the web the cookie lets the retargeting provider know and voila the ad appears again!"

I have to say that I find the idea of being followed around the web a bit creepy, so I don't like this retargeting idea. I tend to turn cookies off.

Good post, though!

I know exactly what you mean about feeling creepy. That's one of the reasons I wanted to let people know how and why it's being done. As you mentioned you can always clear your cookies.
