One of the first things you need to do is find out who your target market is otherwise you will be marketing to everyone and not get your desired results.  In this post I'll discuss 4 steps you need to follow and a way to go more in depth on defining your target audience.

I’m sure you know the importance of marketing your business.  Perhaps you have a marketing plan and are busy implementing these strategies.

Here are 3 questions I'd like you to ask yourself...

First is your marketing strategy going to bring you the needed results?  Maybe your marketing strategy as a photographer is to book more weddings.  Maybe as a business coach you want to attract more clients that you can help.

Second:  Do you have a way to measure the success of your marketing?

Third:  If you find your marketing isn’t successful can you pinpoint where your strategy went wrong?

These three questions are some of the most important questions to ask when it comes to setting up your marketing strategy.   When you have an actual plan in place you will maximize your efforts.

What does a marketing plan entail?  It should describe the actions you plan on taking to promote your product or service.  Having a marketing plan is like laying the foundation to your home.   Everything gets built on it from there.

We are going to discuss how having these 4 elements can maximize your marketing efforts.

1:  Describe your business and it’s objectives.  Take out a piece of paper and write down what your product or service is and what it does.  You are going to also figure out what the goal of your business is.  Having goals will help you choose the marketing activities that will help you maximize your efforts.

2:  Describe your products and services.  In other words describe what you do and how you deliver your product or services.  Is it online teaching?  Is it a product that people purchase and have delivered to their home?   You need to know your products inside and out so you can explain the value of it to others.  Although you think this would be obvious you’d be surprised to find that many business owners can’t describe their products effectively.

3:  Define your target audience.  Who are you creating your products or services for?  This will have a large bearing on the type of marketing you will choose.  Research what your audience is looking for.  Where do they spend a lot of their time?  Facebook, LinkedIn etc?  Learn as much as possible about your audience so that you can relate to them.  You need to find out what their problems are and how your product and services can help them.

4:  Be aware of your competition.   You need to know your competition exists and what they are offering.  That doesn’t mean you copy what they do.  Actually that means you should do the exact opposite!  Make yourself unique!

Once you have gone through all 4 steps you will be able to create a marketing plan that will help you reach your goal which in turn will help you reach your ideal clients/customers.

What’s the number one marketing strategy that you have found to be most helpful in your business?

Over the past couple of years, blogging has been a most beneficial strategy for me. My blog gives me credibility, positions me as an authority, and people contact me most often after reading my blog.

A solid strategy. The 4 elements are fairly clear for selling a novel, but implementing a marketing plan does take time and effort.
